Triaging an Incoming Machine

Incoming Machine - Time to Triage

  • Pull case off
  • Check for bad caps ( if bad,replace bad caps with up sized caps if applicable)
  • Check for hard drive (if present, take to dban station to dban)
  • If bad caps are found do the following:

l:* Remove all expansions/cables to motherboard

  • Remove mother board
  • Begin removing bad caps, do not remove CPU, Memory, or the heat sink/ fan to CPU.
  • To remove a cap...
  • Turn on smoke machine
  • Then turn on the sod erring iron, and set the desired temp
  • Apply small amount of solder to the caps you want to remove to heat solder conductively
  • Put pulling pressure on opposite side of current applied solder. Cap should be wiggled or drop loose.
  • Remove access solder from cap and motherboard
  • Make sure pins are even on new/good cap
  • Take board make sure all open cap spaces have cleaned drilled holes
  • After replacing caps, reconnect the mother board and try to turn it on
  • If this fails, continue with these trouble shooting ideas...
