Drives to DBAN are stored in the Hard Drive box in the testing area. Put a 1in x 3 in sticker on the drive to DBAN and write
Date wipe start: TODAY'S DATE Name: YOURNAME Jumper settings: BLANK FOR NOW Drive size: BLANK FOR NOW
Inspect drive label for jumper settings and set jumper to cable select if possible, if not possible set to master if only using wiping one drive at a time. If using two drives and cable select is not possible, set one as master and the other as a slave. Connect the free 'Molex' power connectors to the drive(s) you will be DBANing. Connect the first cable select (or master) to the master port on the IDE cable and the second cable select (or slave) to the slave port on the same IDE cable.
Start the computer with the DBAN disk inside and set the screen switch on the second level shelf to either A or H, corresponding to the computer you are using. Feel the drives to see if they are vibrating, lighting up, or resist being rotating (conservation of angular momentum!) to make sure they are getting power.
Hit enter when DBAN starts and observe the text on the screen while it starts.
DBAN should find the drive(s) you have connected, if not, then shut the computer off and inspect the jumper settings and power cables. If they look correct and the hard drive is getting power, try a few different jumper settings, you may need to do this several times. If this still doesn't work, note this on your sticker label and put it in the vault.
Drives that are under 10 gigabytes are to be recycled after being DBANed or after failure to DBAN.
